Tulsi Gabbard , Donald Trump's pick to be national intelligence director. The former officials, who served in both Democratic and Republican administrations, said they were “alarmed” by the choice of Gabbard to oversee all 18 U.S. intelligence agencies. They said her past actions “call into question her ability to deliver unbiased intelligence briefings to the President, Congress, and to the entire national security apparatus.” A spokesperson for Gabbard on the Trump transition team on Thursday denounced the appeal as an “unfounded” and “partisan” attack. Among those who signed the letter were former Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, former NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller, former national security adviser Anthony Lake, and numerous retired ambassadors and high-ranking military officers. They wrote to current Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and incoming Republican Majority Leader John Thune on Wednesday to urge the closed briefings as part of the Senate's review of Trump's top appointments. They urged that Senate committees “consider in closed sessions all information available to the U.S. government when considering Ms. Gabbard’s qualifications to manage our country’s intelligence agencies, and more importantly, the protection of our intelligence sources and methods.” The letter singles out Gabbard's 2017 meetings in Syria with President Bashar Assad, who is supported by Russian, Iranian and Iranian-allied forces in a now 13-year war against Syrian opposition forces seeking his overthrow. The U.S., which cut relations with Assad's government and imposed sanctions over his conduct of the war, maintains about 900 troops in opposition-controlled northeast Syria, saying they are needed to block a resurgence of extremist groups. Gabbard, a Democratic member of Congress from Hawaii at the time of her Syria trip, drew heavy criticism for her meetings with a U.S. adversary and brutal leader. As the letter notes, her statements on the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine have aligned with Russian talking points , diverging from U.S. positions and policy. Gabbard throughout her political career has urged the U.S. to limit military engagement abroad other than combatting Islamic extremist groups. She has defended the Syria trip by saying it is necessary to engage with U.S. enemies. In postings on social media earlier this year she confirmed that the U.S. had for a time placed her “on a secret terror watch list” as a “potential domestic terror threat.” She blamed political retaliation. Neither she nor U.S. authorities have publicly detailed the circumstances involved. Alexa Henning, a spokesperson for Gabbard with the Trump team, called the letter sent to the Senate leaders “a perfect example” of why Trump chose Gabbard for this position. “These unfounded attacks are from the same geniuses who have blood on their hands from decades of faulty ‘intelligence,’" and use classified government information as a "partisan weapon to smear and imply things about their political enemy," Henning said. A spokesperson for Thune did not immediately respond to questions about the request.

Many Bears players had exited the field after the Packers’ stunning block of kicker Cairo Santos’ 46-yard field-goal attempt. But cornerback Jaylon Johnson crouched on the sideline at Soldier Field, staring into the distance. Johnson had been at the center of the Packers’ biggest play of their winning drive, when he fell while trying to defend wide receiver Christian Watson. With Johnson on the ground behind him, Watson made a diving catch on a wide ball from Jordan Love, bounced up after going untouched and ran another 40-plus yards before being taken down at the Bears 14-yard line. “Just processing everything that went on in the game,” Johnson said of his postgame reaction. “The possibilities we had to win. And then it didn’t go out in our favor.” By Wednesday when Johnson was reliving that moment at his locker at Halas Hall, he said he already had moved on. He was on to the next game by Tuesday, he said, and the attention this week’s opponent demands should help that quest. The 2023 Bears Pro Bowler has new, even bigger challenges when he faces the Minnesota Vikings and wide receiver Justin Jefferson at Soldier Field. After an injury-marred 2023 season, Jefferson has 59 catches for 912 yards and five touchdowns in 10 games. He has totaled fewer than 81 receiving yards in a game just twice this season and was deemed “a very special player” by Bears cornerbacks coach Jon Hoke. “He’s a really good route runner,” Hoke said. “He’s extremely competitive. And he’s really good to the ball. They throw him open. He can be covered, and they’ll still throw it to him, and he’ll go up and make a terrific play.” Jefferson and Johnson were both drafted in 2020 and have played for the division rivals since. So it’s an oddity that in eight opportunities they’ve met only two other times — on Jan. 9, 2022, and Nov. 16, 2020. Jefferson totaled a combined 13 catches for 242 yards and a touchdown in those games. Jefferson missed both games last season with a hamstring injury. Johnson missed both games in the 2022 season with injuries and two before that with injury and COVID-19. But Johnson knows well what he and fellow cornerbacks Tyrique Stevenson, Terell Smith and Kyler Gordon will be dealing with. Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson (18) is tackled by Bears cornerback Jaylon Jones on the 1-yard-line on Oct. 9, 2022, at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. (Stacey Wescott/Chicago Tribune) “I don’t feel like he has a weakness,” Johnson said. “They’re going to try to get him the ball, so we have to be prepared to limit his production as best we can. “I’m excited. I love playing against high-level guys like him. Just excited to go against their offense. Explosive offense. ... I’m looking forward to the challenge.” Johnson also sees an opportunity this week in facing Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold, who has thrown 10 interceptions, including five in back-to-back weeks at the beginning of November. Johnson has two picks this season, and another certainly would help erase any bad taste from the Packers loss. The fall against Watson was one of Johnson’s higher-profile missteps in recent memory. Johnson had jammed Watson at the line of scrimmage, then got tripped up as Watson ran a crossing route. Bears defensive coordinator Eric Washington said the only things the Bears should have done differently on the play were “we’ve got to hit the quarterback and we’ve got to try to find a way to stay up.” And a few days later, Johnson said he wouldn’t have approached the play differently. “I would have done it the same way,” Johnson said. “I was just trying to get in position to make a play on the ball, and my feet got tangled up. That was it.” 4 catches. 150 yards. That’s #ProBison Christian Watson. pic.twitter.com/cWfBsnFtyv — NDSU Football (@NDSUfootball) November 17, 2024 Johnson told the “Spiegel and Holmes Show” on WSCR-AM 670 he thought he would have been in position to make an interception if he hadn’t tripped. And Hoke agreed he might have been able to make a play on the ball. “He was getting ready to slip the route and come underneath it,” Hoke said. “He would have been in great shape. He did fall. And he did hit the guy’s foot. But also, give the quarterback credit, he pushed the ball out in front. So it goes both ways in football.” Related Articles Chicago Bears | The Caleb Williams File: How the Chicago Bears QB is preparing for a massive Week 12 test Chicago Bears | Column: Will the Chicago Bears find ways to run on the NFL’s No. 1 rushing defense? Here’s how they’ve fared in each game since 1920. Chicago Bears | How will the Minnesota Vikings defend Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams? ‘It’s the mobility that stands out.’ But Hoke had more to say on the play. During the game, Bears coach Matt Eberflus challenged that Watson had made the catch, a ruling that stood after review. Hoke said he watched the replay “so many times” and does not think it was a catch. “Go look at the replay. Go look at his left hand. It’s in a ball over here. It’s not over here,” Hoke said, gesturing in opposite directions. “The crazy thing is it’s a (yellow) glove, and you can see where it is, and this one (moves away), and the front of the ball hits the ground.” A replay official — and Hoke pondered who that was — disagreed, and the Packers scored the winning touchdown two plays later. The Bears, of course, had a chance for the winning field goal, but Santos’ kick was blocked, putting more scrutiny on the defense giving up a second winning drive in four games. Now the Bears must try to stop the 8-2 Vikings and an offense that has surprised behind Darnold. They’re averaging 341 yards and 224.6 passing yards per game, the latter ranked 13th. Aaron Jones and Jordan Addison come in behind Jefferson with 29 and 24 catches, respectively. Washington believes Johnson should be able to leave behind the Watson play to focus on the Vikings — and his first shot at Jefferson in years. “He’s the ultimate competitor and pro, and at the corner position, especially in the secondary, you have to have a short memory,” Washington said. “You have to be able to reset very quickly, and that’s who he is. And his play and his whole approach really confirms that.”

Mike Waltz says federal agencies "pointing at each other" on drone sightings

Tweet Facebook Mail Mysterious flying objects overhead. Concern and confusion. And calls for military intervention. This isn't the plot of "War of the Worlds," but rather the result of numerous unidentified possible drone sightings on the East Coast in recent weeks . The possible drones have been spotted over residential neighborhoods, restricted sites and critical infrastructure. The sightings have put intense pressure on federal agencies to provide more information about the aircraft, as officials have urged calm and emphasised there is no evidence suggesting the sightings pose a security threat. (CNN) "I want to assure the American public that we are on it," Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said Sunday on ABC's "This Week." Reported drone activity prompted at least one airport – New York's Stewart International Airport – to temporarily close its runways for about an hour on Friday night. "This has gone too far," said New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Saturday, adding last month she "directed the New York State Intelligence Center to actively investigate drone sightings and coordinate with federal law enforcement to address this issue." Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he's asking DHS to deploy special detection systems that use 360-degree technology to detect drones. "If the technology exists for a drone to make it up into the sky, there certainly is the technology that can track the craft with precision and determine what the heck is going on," Schumer said Sunday while discussing the technology. The FBI and DHS said in a joint statement Thursday there is "no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus." In Morris County, New Jersey, officials have called for the "federal government to marshal all federal resources at its disposal, including the military, to end the unauthorized flight of drones over our county and other parts of New Jersey." Drones, a broad term for unmanned aerial vehicles, are widely owned across the United States. A total of 791,597 drones are registered with the FAA, nearly evenly divided between commercial and recreational use. They are used in various industries, including photography, agriculture and law enforcement. There remains significant confusion about the exact nature of the sightings and how many are cases of "mistaken identity," as suggested by Mayorkas and White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby. Here's more on what we know and don't know about the reported sightings. Drone sightings have been reported in at least six states: New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Virginia. The sightings began on November 18 near Morris County, New Jersey, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Republican New Jersey Assemblyman Paul Kanitra told CNN's Sara Sidner Friday morning there had been drone sightings every night since then. Unnerved residents have frequently reported seeing drones hovering overhead, sometimes traveling in clusters. Concerns escalated after drones were spotted near the Picatinny Arsenal, a US military research facility, and over President-elect Donald Trump's golf course in Bedminster, according to military officials and state lawmakers. The sightings prompted the FAA to issue temporary flight restrictions over the properties. "Several instances of unidentified drones entering the airspace" were also reported above Naval Weapons Station Earle, a US Navy base south of Middletown, although no direct threats were identified. Democratic Sen. Andy Kim of New Jersey posted videos to his X account showing what appeared to be a cluster of drones over the Round Valley Reservoir Thursday night. But on Saturday, he posted on X most of the aircraft he initially thought were drones, were "almost certainly planes." Representatives from the federal agencies investigating the drones have briefed local officials behind closed doors, stating the drones sometimes appear to fly in a coordinated pattern and can remain in flight for up to six hours, according to Montvale, New Jersey, Mayor Mike Ghassali. New York State Police said Friday afternoon in a post on X they had received "numerous reports of drone sightings over the past 24 hours" and they were investigating the reports. She continued to call for the passing of the federal Counter-UAS Authority Security, Safety, and Reauthorisation Act, which she said would "give New York and our peers the authority and resources required to respond to circumstances like we face today." Hochul spoke with Mayorkas twice on Saturday regarding the ongoing drone activity in her state, according to a source familiar with the conversations. Connecticut State Police announced Friday they have deployed a drone detection system to assist in the investigation of unauthorised drone sightings reported over Fairfield County. Today three are dead and the final five have returned home "It's very unsettling to public safety and security, both here in Fairfield and elsewhere," Republican state Senator Tony Hwang said in a statement Friday. Pennsylvania Govenor Josh Shapiro said his administration is "aware of" reported drone sightings and is taking them seriously. The Democratic governor said Friday evening he directed the Pennsylvania State Police to further investigate the sightings, and police will be flying helicopters to try to "determine where these drones are originating from and what the purpose of these drones are." In Massachusetts, Govenor Maura Healey posted on X Saturday about the "growing number of drone sightings" in her state. She said state police were working alongside "local and federal partners" and urged drone operators to adhere to regulations. Two men were arrested Saturday night on trespassing charges after a drone came "dangerously close" to Logan International Airport in Boston, police said in a statement. And in Virginia, Governor Glenn Youngkin said in a Saturday statement state police and the Department of Emergency Management were coordinating closely with "numerous federal partners" to respond to drone reports. He emphasised the "significant number of national security and critical infrastructure sites" in Virginia. "There's no question that people are seeing drones," Mayorkas told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on Sunday. "And I want to assure the American public that we, in the federal government, have deployed additional resources, personnel, technology to assist the New Jersey State Police in addressing the drone sightings." READ MORE: 'Build to rent' properties promising longer tenancies and more security The FBI and DHS have said they believe most of the drone sightings are cases of "mistaken identity". (AP) What are the aircraft? The FBI and DHS have said they believe most of the drone sightings are cases of "mistaken identity," with members of the public misidentifying small, legally operating manned aircraft as drones. Some of the sightings may also be commercial drones, Mayorkas told CNN's Wolf Blitzer Friday. "We know of no threat or nefarious activity," Mayorkas said. "If we learn of any cause for concern, we will be transparent in our communication of it." Some of the more recent sightings might be due to copycats flying their drones as the phenomena get more news coverage, former FBI supervisory special agent Tom Adams told CNN Friday. He said there are often innocent explanations for the sightings as well. "I can tell you from my firsthand experience conducting operations for the FBI, as well as investigations into the suspected sighting of drones at critical infrastructure, it was fairly common for planets, crewed aircraft and even low Earth orbit satellites to be misidentified as drones at night," Adams said. At a news briefing on Saturday, an FBI official reiterated the sightings were largely manned aircraft mistaken for drones. The official noted similar flight approach patterns from nearby airports matched the visual sightings reported to tip lines. The FBI official said the tip line has received 5000 tips, but fewer than 100 have led to leads "deemed worthy of further investigative activity." No evidence supporting "large-scale UAS activity" has been found, the official said, using the acronym for "unmanned aircraft system." READ MORE: Officer who shot Lindt Cafe terrorist says he was haunted by harrowing day There's been a "slight overreaction" to the reports, the FBI official said. Still, "we can't ignore the sightings that have been there, and we are concerned about those just as much as anybody else is," the official added. An official with the Department of Defense, however, was less confident about the nature of the sightings. "We don't know if it's malicious, if it is criminal. But I will tell you that it is – it is irresponsible," the official said. "Here on the military side, we are just as frustrated with the irresponsible nature of this activity." The official added highly trained security personnel have reported sightings of drones at Picatinny Arsenal and Naval Weapons Station Earle, both in New Jersey. The points of origin and operators have not been identified, the official said. The Pentagon shut down speculation the drones may originate from a foreign entity or adversary on Wednesday, hours after US Rep. Jeff Van Drew, a New Jersey Republican, told Fox News the drones were from "a mothership" from Iran that is "off the East Coast of the United States of America." "There is not any truth to that," deputy Pentagon press secretary Sabrina Singh said Wednesday. "There is no Iranian ship off the coast of the United States, and there's no so-called mothership launching drones towards the United States." The FBI is leading the investigation into the sightings alongside the Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness, while the US Coast Guard is assessing jurisdictional responses. On Sunday, US Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota said the US government needs to be more transparent about the reported sightings. "One, we need a briefing for the members of the Senate to figure out what's going on here," the Minnesota Democrat said during an appearance on CBS' "Face the Nation." "Two, we need more transparency." Despite federal officials' assurances the drones don't pose a public safety threat, Belleville, New Jersey, Mayor Michael Melham has said he has received guidance police should call the county bomb squad and local fire departments should wear hazmat suits if they encounter a downed drone. "We just don't know what these things are, so we are being cautious," Melham said. "Mystery Drone sightings all over the Country. Can this really be happening without our government's knowledge. I don't think so! Let the public know, and now. Otherwise, shoot them down!!!" Trump posted on Truth Social. US Sen. Richard Blumenthal, who sits on the Senate's Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, similarly said Thursday the aircraft "should be shot down, if necessary, because they're flying over sensitive areas." But shooting down unidentified aircraft poses its own problems. Speaking to CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Mayorkas said, "It's not as though anyone can just take down a drone in the sky. That in and of itself would be dangerous." Similarly, a source familiar with the national investigation into the aircraft told CNN shooting them out of the sky would be "beyond risky," posing an unnecessary risk to people on the ground and legal challenges. The source noted the government has various strategies that can be deployed if a drone poses an imminent threat, but so far, the mysterious flights have not been deemed threatening. "Blowing it out of the sky is the last resort," the source said. READ MORE: US city gets first ever tornado warning Who regulates drones? Part of the challenge in monitoring drone activity stems from the fact regulation of the skies is almost entirely under federal jurisdiction, according to the chief executive of a company tracking unauthorised drone flights. "The laws that regulate aircraft are not built to empower police to deal with the drones," Axon CEO Rick Smith told CNN News Central Friday, "so if your local state fair has a drone coming towards it that police believe might be dangerous, right now there's nothing they can do about it." FAA regulations allow operators of recreational drones to fly up to 400 feet above the ground in airspace not controlled by FAA air traffic controllers. The FAA does grant waivers on a case-by-case basis to those wanting to operate drones in more congested airspace or at higher altitudes. ("UPS" or the "Company") UPS investors of a class action representing investors that bought securities between January 30, 2024 and July 22, 2024 , inclusive (the "Class Period"). UPS investors have until December 9, 2024 to file a lead plaintiff motion. Investors are encouraged to contact attorney Lesley F. The Portnoy Law Firm can provide a complimentary case evaluation and discuss investors' options for pursuing claims to recover their losses. The complaint states that during the class period, the defendants misled investors by suggesting they had reliable information about the Company's revenue and growth expectations, while downplaying risks from seasonal and economic changes. In reality, UPS's positive reports about growth, plans to manage volume changes, and claims that the first quarter would have the worst margins were not accurate. The Company was not prepared to handle a surge in volume without a significant drop in operating margin. The plaintiff claims that the truth came out on July 23, 2024, when UPS released its second-quarter financial results, gave lower-than-expected guidance for the third quarter, and revised its margin expectations for the full fiscal year. The Company explained this by citing a shift in the U.S. volume mix towards lower-cost products. Following this announcement, UPS's stock price dropped from $145.18 per share on July 22 to $127.68 per share on July 23, a decrease of $17.50 per share, or about 12.05%. Three straight setbacks, including an ugly 17-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, has left the Falcons 6-6 and feeling the pressure. Only a tiebreaker advantage over Tampa Bay has kept the Falcons atop the division. Now the Falcons must prepare to visit streaking Minnesota, which has won five straight . Veteran defensive tackle Grady Jarrett knows the Falcons must solve the flaws which have been exposed in the losing streak. “It’s now or never,” Jarrett said. “You have to flip the mindset fast.” Kirk Cousins threw four interceptions in the loss, matching his career high. Coach Raheem Morris said he didn't consider playing rookie Michael Penix Jr. against the Chargers and won't think about benching Cousins this week. Morris acknowledged the Falcons can't expect to win when turning the ball over four times. It was the latest example of Atlanta's offensive decline. In the three-game losing streak, Cousins has thrown six interceptions with no touchdowns. The Falcons were held under 20 points in each loss. What’s working If not for the rash of interceptions which has contributed to the scoring problems, more attention would be devoted to the surge of big plays on defense. The defense forced two fumbles and set a season high with five sacks, including two by Arnold Ebiketie. The Falcons ranked last in the league with only 10 sacks before finding success with their pass rush against Justin Herbert. Herbert was forced to hold the ball while looking for an open receiver, so some credit for the pass-rush success belongs to Atlanta's secondary. The Falcons gave up only two first downs in the second half and 187 yards for the game. What needs help Cousins, 36, was expected to be the reliable leader on offense after he signed a four-year, $180 million contract. The four interceptions were his most since 2014 with Washington. Cousins now will be in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons as he returns to Minnesota, his NFL home from 2018-23. Cousins has thrown 13 interceptions, one shy of his career high set in 2022. His passer rating of 90.8 is his lowest since his 86.4 mark as a part-time starter in 2014 with Washington. “Certainly when you haven’t played at the standard you want to a few weeks in a row, you know, you do want to change that, turn it around,” Cousins said. Stock up Running back Bijan Robinson had his busiest day of the season, perhaps in an attempt to take heat off Cousins. Robinson's 26 carries set a career high. He ran for 102 yards with a touchdown, his third 100-yard game of the season. He also was heavily involved as a receiver with six catches for 33 yards. With 135 yards from scrimmage, Robinson has eight games this season with more than 100 yards combined as a rusher and receiver, the second-most in the league. Stock down Tight end Kyle Pitts had no catches on only two targets. He has only six catches in the last four games after appearing to establish momentum for a big season with two seven-catch games in a span of three weeks in October. Morris noted the Falcons have “so many people that we've got to get the ball to” but noted he'd like to see Pitts more involved. Injuries Younghoe Koo's hip issues were such a concern that kicker Riley Patterson was signed to the practice squad on Friday and added to the active roster Saturday. Patterson was on the inactive list as Koo was good on two of three field goals, missing from 35 yards. Koo has made 21 of 29 attempts this season. He did not have more than five misses in any of his first five seasons with Atlanta. Key number 70 — WR Drake London had nine receptions for 86 yards, giving him 70 catches for the season. London, a 2022 first-round draft pick, is the first player in team history with at least 65 receptions in each of his first three seasons. While Ray-Ray McCloud III led the team with a career-best 95 yards on four catches against the Chargers and Darnell Mooney has had some big games, London has been the most consistent receiver. Next steps The Falcons face a difficult test Sunday in their visit to Minnesota (10-2), which has five straight wins and is 5-1 at home. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl

As U.S. goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher looked ahead to the next Women's World Cup in 2027, she calculated what that would look like at her age. Now 36, she already has a World Cup title and won an Olympic gold medal this year in France. She considered the mental, physical and emotional toll of a new cycle and decided it was time to step away . “Honestly, I think I’ve been somebody that has given everything I’ve had to this team. I don’t do anything halfway. It’s kind of, if you can give 100% to it, then keep going," she said. “With that in mind, I kind of just felt like this was the right time coming off of the Olympics, having the year that we had, entering into a new cycle, a new stage for this team.” Naeher is the latest veteran to announce she's stepping down from the national team as the next generation takes over under coach Emma Hayes. Among those who have wrapped up their soccer careers in the past couple of years include World Cup winners Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, Kelley O'Hara and Ali Krieger. Naeher will be with the team for two more matches in the coming week. The Americans play England at Wembley Stadium on Saturday and then the Netherlands in The Hague on Tuesday. Naeher said she's excited about the next generation of goalkeepers. In addition to Naeher, Mandy Haught of the Utah Royals and Phallon Tullis-Joyce of Manchester United are on the roster for the upcoming matches. Other goalkeepers who have been on recent rosters include Casey Murphy and Jane Campbell. “I think the beauty of goalkeeping is that it’s not really a one-size-fits-all kind of position," she said. "The more that you can understand — that's going to be the challenge any young goalkeeper coming up, is really taking the time to understand what your strengths are and make them really, really elite and separate yourself.” Naeher spoke on Wednesday from London after announcing her retirement on social media Monday . Naeher made her senior debut with the national team in 2014 and was a backup to Hope Solo at the 2015 World Cup, which the United States won. She became the team’s regular starter following the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and was on the squad that repeated as World Cup winners in 2019. Naeher won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 before the U.S. earned gold this year in Paris. She made a key one-handed save in stoppage time to preserve the Americans’ 1-0 victory over Brazil in the Olympic final. For her career, Naeher has appeared 113 games with 110 starts, 88 wins and 68 shutouts. She had four shutouts over the course of the Olympic tournament in France. While she's leaving the national team, she'll play one more year for her club team, the Chicago Red Stars in the National Women's Soccer League. “I hope that I can be remembered as a good teammate, as a competitor, as somebody that was looked on as someone that could be relied upon on the field and supported those players around me,” she said. “I think it’s just been a really special team to be a part of. And I’m very proud of what we have been able to accomplish over the years.” AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccerViral ring girl Sydney Thomas reveals why she split up with her boyfriend just before becoming famous

Canadiens' Mike Matheson out against Utah with lower-body injuryMELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Australia’s House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a bill that would ban children younger than 16 years old from social media , leaving it to the Senate to finalize the world-first law. The major parties backed the bill that would make platforms including TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, X and Instagram liable for fines of up to 50 million Australian dollars ($33 million) for systemic failures to prevent young children from holding accounts. The legislation was passed with 102 votes in favor to 13 against. If the bill becomes law this week, the platforms would have one year to work out how to implement the age restrictions before the penalties are enforced. Opposition lawmaker Dan Tehan told Parliament the government had agreed to accept amendments in the Senate that would bolster privacy protections. Platforms would not be allowed to compel users to provide government-issued identity documents including passports or driver’s licenses. The platforms also could not demand digital identification through a government system. “Will it be perfect? No. But is any law perfect? No, it’s not. But if it helps, even if it helps in just the smallest of ways, it will make a huge difference to people’s lives,” Tehan told Parliament. Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said the Senate would debate the bill later Wednesday. The major parties’ support all but guarantees the legislation will be passed by the Senate where no party holds a majority of seats. Lawmakers who were not aligned with either the government or the opposition were most critical of the legislation during debate on Tuesday and Wednesday. Criticisms include that the legislation had been rushed through Parliament without adequate scrutiny, would not work, would create privacy risks for users of all ages and would take away parents’ authority to decide what’s best for their children. Critics also argue the ban would isolate children, deprive them of positive aspects of social media, drive children to the dark web, make children too young for social media reluctant to report harms they encountered and take away incentives for platforms to make online spaces safer. Independent lawmaker Zoe Daniel said the legislation would “make zero difference to the harms that are inherent to social media.” “The true object of this legislation is not to make social media safe by design, but to make parents and voters feel like the government is doing something about it,” Daniel told Parliament. “There is a reason why the government parades this legislation as world-leading, that’s because no other country wants to do it,” she added. T he platforms had asked for the vote on legislation to be delayed until at least June next year when a government-commissioned evaluation of age assurance technologies made its report on how the ban could been enforced. Conor Bradley destroyed Kylian Mbappe in every way and Alexis Mac Allister was a prime Luka Modric against the actual Luka Modric. Liverpool are good. Real Madrid are bad. Whether you love, hate or are indifferent towards Liverpool, we were all Conor Bradley. An academy lad who’s the most second of second fiddles in his position at the club, playing his first ever Champions League game against the reigning champions and champion of all champions, and he clears out the best footballer in the world – albeit The Artist Formerly Known As Kylian Mbappe on this showing and others this season – with a glorious man and ball challenge to produce the sort of roar from a crowd typically reserved for game-winning goals. Spine tingles and ‘ooofffss’ all round. It’s a sure red card if he gets it wrong but not having the time or headspace in an already fervent atmosphere to make a risk assessment worked in his and Liverpool’s favour, with his and his team’s level rising a couple of notches on the back of a tackle every fat dad bellowing from the stands or watching at home would loved to have made on a footballer we can all agree could do with a good (fair) kicking once in a while. Bradley very nearly opened the scoring himself before playing a key role as the Reds deservedly took the lead. Alexis Mac Allister had played two similarly brilliant lofted passes in the first half to cause chaos in the Real Madrid defence and the best of the lot found Bradley’s perfectly-timed run in the 51st-minute, with Thibaut Courtois producing another excellent save to palm the full-back’s header away, having denied Darwin Nunez twice in the first half. Mac Allister was playing like a prime Luka Modric against a less-than prime Luka Modric. In a fraught, end-to-end, exhausting game in which neither team seemed able or even willing to try to string more than three or four passes together, the Argentinian had time and space on the ball, consistently made the right decisions and always looked the best bet to make the difference. He picked the ball up in the pocket in front of the Madrid defence, played a neat pass into Bradley, who acted as a wall on the right side of the box to pop the ball straight back into the midfielder, who took a touch and fired his shot into the far corner. Ally McCoist got a tad carried away with what we would suggest was a relatively simple first-time pass from Bradley to assist that goal, nicely weighted though it was, but the 21-year-old’s other contributions allow the frankly unbelievable thought to creep in that Liverpool might just be alright without the most talented right-back English football has ever seen . And it was hard to watch Mbappe consistently failing to release himself from the pocket of a full-back working as hard as Bradley without the ball and so effectively with it and think anything other than Liverpool would actually have been worse off with Trent Alexander-Arnold on the pitch in his place. Cue midfield transition chat... MORE LIVERPOOL FEATURES ON F365 👉 Trent Alexander-Arnold ‘tarnished’ by Real Madrid move? Only by idiots... 👉 Five next moves for Salah ranked on likelihood include leaving Liverpool for Barcelona 👉 Culture wars, ref justice and how the league might look if Mo Salah didn’t exist We were utterly convinced we were going to go two for two in our penalty predictions. It was really poor from Andy Robertson to concede Madrid’s penalty, turning his back as Lucas Vasquez faked a cross, but after the game Mbappe had had, after the season he’s had, Coimhin Kelleher was always going to make what was a good (because penalty saves must always be called such) but comfortable save. As Mohamed Salah stepped up to take the penalty he won by turning Ferland Mendy inside out we were bracing ourselves for a Never In Doubt-like cliche from Darren Fletcher, before the Egyptian failed to even hit the target to remind us of an average penalty record that sees him miss one of every five (44 scored; 11 missed). For once this game wasn’t about him. There was next to no danger of a Madrid comeback anyway but Cody Gakpo put the game beyond doubt with quite the leap and header from a Robertson corner as defenders stood and watched. And while this is undoubtedly a Big Win for Liverpool, which maintains their 100 per cent record in the Champions League and all but secures their automatic qualification, this was a Madrid side well short of its best, both in terms of performance and personnel. No Vinicius Junior, no Rodrygo, no Eder Militao, no David Alaba, no Aurelien Tchouameni, no Dani Carvajal. That’s an injury list to rival that of Manchester City, who look set to feel the full force of Liverpool on Sunday. If winning is a hard habit to break, Arne Slot’s side are in 20-a-day territory right now. After the final whistle, Rio Ferdinand claimed – entirely reasonably for once – that “Liverpool are the team to beat in Europe right now”. There was also effectively no Mbappe, who likely had no idea who Conor Bradley was when he rocked up at Anfield. But having enjoyed nothing other than a faceful of turf courtesy of the full-back, he now knows exactly who Conor Bradley is.

Bucharest: A senior official at Romania’s telecoms regulator called on Wednesday for TikTok to be suspended pending an investigation into the platform’s potential role in Sunday’s shock far-right victory in the first round of a presidential election. Having polled in single digits before Sunday’s vote, independent far-right politician Calin Georgescu, 62, surged to a victory that raised questions over how such a surprise had been possible in the European Union and NATO member state. Shock win: Romanian presidential candidate Calin Georgescu. Credit: Getty Images He will face centrist contender Elena Lasconi in a run-off on December 8. Georgescu gained many votes from young voters and Romanians living abroad, and his campaign relied heavily on the video-sharing platform. “I call for the TikTok platform to be suspended in Romania as of November 28 until state institutions finalise an investigation concerning the manipulation of the electoral process,” telecoms regulator deputy chief Pavel Popescu was quoted saying by the news website profit.ro. “I will start the official process to that end tomorrow.” A man with the Romanian and EU flags takes part in a protest against Calin Georgescu in Bucharest. Credit: AP The government’s press office did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment. Romania’s National Audiovisual Council (NAC) had already called on the European Commission on Tuesday to investigate TikTok’s role in the vote, due to “suspicions of manipulation of public opinion”. NAC vice president Valentin-Alexandru Jucan said the council believed the platform’s algorithms had amplified material favourable to a single candidate and that it had lacked transparency about who was sponsoring election content. A TikTok spokesperson dismissed such concerns. “These ... reports about the Romanian elections are inaccurate and misleading, as most candidates have established a TikTok presence and the winners campaigned on other digital platforms beyond ours,” the spokesperson said. TikTok did not immediately respond to a further request for comment about Popescu’s comments. The European Commission confirmed by email that it had received a request to launch a probe. “If the Commission suspects a breach on the basis of the evidence at our disposal, it can open proceedings to look into TikTok’s compliance ... We are closely monitoring developments.” In a further sign of the level of concern in the nation of 19 million people, the president’s office said Romania’s top security body would meet on Thursday to discuss possible risks to the country and its electoral process stemming from social media. Meanwhile, two candidates eliminated in the first round have challenged the election round at Romania’s top court asking it to recall the result on the grounds Georgescu did not declare any campaign funding sources. Georgescu’s team has yet to comment on the challenge. Georgescu has said his campaign budget was zero and backed entirely by volunteers. Analysts and politicians have said his surprise win relative to his pre-election polling data indicated foreign interference in the election. Before the vote, Romania’s intelligence agency told lawmakers it had not detected signs that national security was breached. Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Bucharest on Tuesday evening, chanting: “No Putin, no fear, Europe is our mother,” and “Young people ask you not to vote for a dictator.” Protests were also held in other major cities. Georgescu has previously praised 1930s Romanian fascist politicians as national heroes and martyrs, has been critical of NATO and Romania’s pro-Ukraine position, and has said the country should engage, not challenge Russia. But in a stream on Facebook on Tuesday evening, he said: “I do not want to leave NATO, I do not want to leave the European Union. What I want, however, is to take a stance, not to kneel over there, not to take everything. Like I said, we should do everything in our national interest.” Reuters Get a note directly from our foreign correspondents on what’s making headlines around the world. Atlantic City Electric customers experienced the lowest frequency of electric outages ever in 2023, the company said, due to such investments. If approved, the 8% increase would cost residential customers about $12.96 more per month, the three legislators said. Atlantic City Electric customers have said their bills spiked suddenly this year, and have questioned whether the company's billing is accurate. The governors of Pennsylvania and New Jersey are among the state leaders calling on the regional energy grid operator to help make bills more affordable for local consumers. Utility officials have said hotter temperatures this summer and increased costs for energy, energy delivery and transmission are the reasons for the increases. Last week, U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-2nd, criticized Atlantic City Electric parent Exelon for seeking another rate increase. "Let me be clear — Exelon has already taken far too much from the hardworking families and small businesses of South Jersey," Van Drew said. "Now, they are trying to force our residents to bankroll their radical agenda, including electric car charging stations, while they continue to rake in massive profits." He said he will brief the incoming administration on the issue and continue to push for a federal investigation into Exelon's practices. Polistina's outdoor restaurant seating bill now law A COVID-era practice of allowing restaurants and some alcoholic beverage retailers to keep using adjacent outdoor spaces and public sidewalks is now guaranteed by law. Gov. Phil Murphy signed legislation (S3608) sponsored by state Sen. Vince Polistina, R-Atlantic, into law Monday, making the temporary provisions permanent. “New Jersey businesses benefited immensely from the innovative measures we adopted during COVID to enable the use of outdoor spaces,” Polistina said. “By making the temporary outdoor dining and beverage laws permanent, our local businesses will continue to have the flexibility they need to thrive by maintaining the indoor and outdoor seating arrangements that patrons have come to enjoy." He called the bipartisan legislation a big win for businesses, residents and local economies. A combination of increased energy supply prices, rising distribution rates and record demand during a particularly hot, humid summer drove spiking electric bills that caused a customer outcry, Atlantic City Electric told a state legislative committee Wednesday. An earlier law that allowed businesses to temporarily operate in these spaces during the pandemic was set to expire Saturday. Businesses seeking to use outdoor spaces or public sidewalks must file applications with their municipal zoning officer. Testa says GOP warned of state budget woes Republicans have long warned about New Jersey’s looming fiscal cliff, and now Murphy has ordered state departments to cut spending by 5% because we are approaching that cliff, state Sen. Michael Testa, R-Cape May, Cumberland, Atlantic, said Monday in a news release. “While our proposals for moderate spending restraints were ignored, Democrats in Trenton went on a seven-year-long spending binge only now to act surprised that their tax and spend ideology led us right toward the fiscal cliff we warned about," Testa said. Murphy’s administration has ordered state agencies to limit hiring and freeze some pay raises, according to emails obtained by NJ Advance Media. Under Murphy's leadership, the state budget has swelled from $34.7 billion in Gov. Chris Christie's last budget in 2018 to $56.6 billion this year. That's an increase of more than 60%. "If Governor Murphy truly wants to fix the mess he’s created, he would embrace Republican cost-saving proposals — but we’d probably have a better chance of convincing Hannibal Lecter to give up meat for Lent," Testa said.
