Stocks wavered on Wall Street in afternoon trading Thursday, as gains in tech companies and retailers helped temper losses elsewhere in the market. The S&P 500 was up less than 0.1% after drifting between small gains and losses. The benchmark index is coming off a three-day winning streak. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 10 points, or less than 0.1%, as of 3:20 p.m. Eastern time. The Nasdaq composite was up 0.1%. Trading volume was lighter than usual as U.S. markets reopened after the Christmas holiday. Chip company Broadcom rose 2.5%, Micron Technology was up 1.3% and Adobe gained 0.8%. While tech stocks overall were in the green, some heavyweights were a drag on the market. Semiconductor giant Nvidia, whose enormous valuation gives it an outsize influence on indexes, slipped 0.1%. Meta Platforms fell 0.5%, Amazon was down 0.4%, and Netflix gave up 0.7%. Tesla was among the biggest decliners in the S&P 500, down 1.4%. Health care stocks helped lift the market. CVS Health rose 1.4% and Walgreens Boots Alliance rose 3.9% for the biggest gain among S&P 500 stocks. Several retailers also gained ground. Target rose 3.1%, Ross Stores added 1.8%, Best Buy was up 2.5% and Dollar Tree gained 3.6%. Traders are watching to see whether retailers have a strong holiday season. The day after Christmas traditionally ranks among the top 10 biggest shopping days of the year, as consumers go online or rush to stores to cash in gift cards and raid bargain bins. U.S.-listed shares in Honda and Nissan rose 4.2% and 15.9%, respectively. The Japanese automakers announced earlier this week that the two companies are in talks to combine. Traders got a labor market update. U.S. applications for unemployment benefits held steady last week, though continuing claims rose to the highest level in three years, the Labor Department reported. Treasury yields turned mostly lower in the bond market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.58% from 4.59% late Tuesday. Major European markets were closed, as well as Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia. Trading was expected to be subdued this week with a thin slate of economic data on the calendar. Still, U.S. markets have historically gotten a boost at year’s end despite lower trading volumes. The last five trading days of each year, plus the first two in the new year, have brought an average gain of 1.3% since 1950. So far this month, the U.S. stock market has lost some of its gains since President-elect Donald Trump’s win on Election Day, which raised hopes for faster economic growth and more lax regulations that would boost corporate profits. Worries have risen that Trump’s preference for tariffs and other policies could lead to higher inflation, a bigger U.S. government debt and difficulties for global trade. Even so, the U.S. market remains on pace to deliver strong returns for 2024. The benchmark S&P 500 is up roughly 26% so far this year and remains near its most recent all-time high it set earlier this month — its latest of 57 record highs this year. Wall Street has several economic reports to look forward to next week, including updates on pending home sales and home prices, a report on U.S. construction spending and snapshots of manufacturing activity.Ruben Amorim takes charge of Manchester United for the first time in Sunday's trip to Ipswich, while Manchester City are aiming to snap a historic losing streak for Pep Guardiola against Tottenham. Fourth takes on fifth in another of Saturday's eye-catching fixtures when Arsenal hope to kickstart their faltering title challenge at home to Nottingham Forest. AFP Sport picks out some of the key talking points ahead of this weekend's action: Man Utd start Amorim era Manchester United fans have been made to wait three weeks for Ruben Amorim's arrival since he was confirmed as the successor to Erik ten Hag. The Portuguese does not face a baptism of fire, but Ipswich are on a high ahead of the visit of the Red Devils after securing their first Premier League win for 22 years before the international break with a shock 2-1 victory at Tottenham. Amorim has plenty of problems to solve at Old Trafford, but begins with United only four points adrift of the top four despite sitting down in 13th. Ten Hag managed just one win from seven away games in all competitions this season and Amorim must find a quick tonic to that travel sickness if he is to make a positive first impression with the United fans. United midfielder Bruno Fernandes is confident his compatriot will quickly make a positive connection with his new players. "Obviously for me, what stands out is the connection he has with the (Sporting) players," Fernandes said. "You see the way they say goodbye to him, the way they feel, they make him feel part of the team and how they treat him. "So it shows that this is a great character and he's someone that gives his all to the players." Slumping Man City eye revival Across Manchester, champions City have lost four consecutive games for the first time in Pep Guardiola's glorious managerial career. However, on Thursday Guardiola signed a two-year contract extension, ending speculation over his future and allowing the boss to focus on reviving his spluttering side. The two-week hiatus for international football also came at the right time for Guardiola to reset as he looks for key players to return from a lengthy injury list. Guardiola's men find themselves five points behind leaders Liverpool, who face bottom-of-the-table Southampton on Sunday, and can ill afford to drop any more points ahead of a daunting trip to Anfield next weekend. This is the sixth time a team has been five points clear after 11 Premier League games, with the previous five all finishing as champions. But City have trailed the leaders by more than five points at one stage in each of the last four seasons and still finished with the title. Arsenal search for answers The Gunners have fallen nine points behind Liverpool after a run of three wins from their last nine league matches, including four without a victory prior to the visit of Forest. Great expectation was placed upon Mikel Arteta's men to end a two-decade wait to win the league after finishing second to City in each of the last two seasons. But Arsenal's season has been a story of needless red cards, injuries to key men and a lack of killer instinct in front of goal. Arteta needs to find answers quickly if they are to remain in the title race. Fixtures Saturday Leicester v Chelsea, Arsenal v Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa v Crystal Palace, Bournemouth v Brighton, Everton v Brentford, Fulham v Wolves, Manchester City v Tottenham Sunday Southampton v Liverpool, Ipswich v Manchester United Monday Newcastle v West HamMINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell's stirring locker room tribute to his team last week at Seattle was respectfully interrupted by seven-year veteran right tackle Brian O'Neill, who flipped the script on the game ball awards by tossing one to the boss in honor of his second 13-win season in three years. The Vikings have obliterated even the most optimistic of external predictions for this transitional season, taking a sparkling 13-2 record into their matchup against the Green Bay Packers that has made O'Connell the current favorite for the NFL Coach of the Year award. “It’s a credit to who he is as a person, as a coach and as a leader,” tight end T.J. Hockenson said. “We’re very fortunate to be able to play under him.” The Vikings can not only win the NFC North for a second time in three seasons, but get the No. 1 seed with a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the NFC tournament if they beat both the Packers at home on Sunday and the Detroit Lions on the road next week. Don't expect the Vikings to ponder that possibility, though, as tantalizing as it would be. “It can be a very tired cliché to talk about going 1-0 until you’ve systematically built your entire operation daily of just trying to do that every single day,” O'Connell said after Minnesota's eighth consecutive victory . “These guys, it’s not a cliché at that point. It becomes part of your football foundation and the makeup of your locker room, of your leadership, your coaching staff.” The Packers could be forgiven for being less than impressed by the impact O'Connell has made, for a reason beyond simply him coaching their biggest rival. Green Bay enjoyed even better out-of-the-gate success under coach Matt LaFleur, who was hired in 2019 and won 13 regular-season games in each of his first three years. Though they're in third place at 11-4, two games behind the Lions and the Vikings, the Packers too have secured a place in the playoffs even if they can't win their loaded division. They'll likely be the visiting team as long as they're alive this postseason. "I think that just all of us going against one another, it’s forced you to be at your best every week," LaFleur said. “You can’t afford a slip-up, just to keep up with everybody.” The road team has won each of the past three matchups in this series. The Packers are 0-4 against the teams with the top three records in the NFC: Detroit, Minnesota and Philadelphia. “We’ve got to be able to go win these games against the really good teams in the league and set ourselves up for the situation we’ll be in for the playoffs,” quarterback Jordan Love said. Aaron Jones rushed for 93 yards on 22 carries for Minnesota in a 31-29 victory at Green Bay on Sept. 29. Released by the Packers for salary cap relief in favor of their premier free agency addition, the three-plus-years-younger Josh Jacobs, Jones just hit the 1,000-yard mark last week and can't hide from the significance of facing his former team. "They respect you because they were on your team or they've seen the work that you put in, but you want to gain their respect in another way from playing against them, like, ‘Man, this dude is really as good as I thought he was,’" Jones said. Jacobs, for his part, is fourth in the NFL entering Week 17 with 1,216 rushing yards for the most by a Packers player in a season since Ryan Grant (1,253) in 2009. The earlier matchup this season featured seven combined turnovers, four by the Packers and three by the Vikings. Both of these teams are among the NFL's best in the turnover department, with Green Bay at a plus-12 margin and Minnesota at a plus-10. The Packers have allowed a total of three sacks and have committed just two turnovers over their past five games. The Vikings are eagerly anticipating the return of second-year linebacker Ivan Pace, the sparkplug who has missed four games on injured reserve with a hamstring strain. They’ll be cautious with him and the tricky nature of that injury, but getting Pace back in the middle of the action with fellow linebacker Blake Cashman would be a big boost to the play-calling options for defensive coordinator Brian Flores. “He flies around. When he blitzes, he’s as impactful as anybody, and when you can really get him and Cash out there at the same time, they both can really play to their strengths,” O’Connell said. “They’re both really good blitzers. Cash is phenomenal in coverage and reading the quarterback, and when you can kind of pair those guys together, run and pass, that’s when we’re at our best.” Brayden Narveson missed both of his field-goal attempts for Green Bay, from 37 and 49 yards, in the two-point decision at Lambeau Field in Week 4. The Packers released Narveson a couple of weeks later in favor of 11-year veteran Brandon McManus, who has gone 16 of 17 on field-goal tries including game-winners as time expired against Houston and Jacksonville. Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, has reiterated the Gulf countries' support for Syria and Lebanon. In his speech at the 46th extraordinary meeting of the Ministerial Council of the Cooperation Council, Albudaiwi affirmed that the convening of the meeting comes to coordinate the positions of the GCC states in light of the ongoing events in Syria and Lebanon, and the accompanying rapid developments, and to reaffirm the GCC's support for the two countries, for everything that would enhance their security and stability, in various circumstances and situations. "This meeting reflects the great keenness and interest of the GCC states in the issues of the Arab and Islamic nations. It seeks to enhance joint co-operation among the GCC states to address current challenges and work towards achieving security and stability in the region, which contributes to supporting sustainable development and strengthening Arab and Islamic unity," he stated. He explained that since the beginning of the Syrian crisis, the Cooperation Council has adopted a firm stance and a clear policy towards the crisis in Syria, and has made continuous efforts to support the brotherly Syrian people, including Kuwait's hosting of a number of donor conferences to support the humanitarian situation in Syria, and the provision of relief and humanitarian assistance by the GCC states to the brotherly Syrian people amounting to more than $8bn, and its hosting of more than 2mn residents from the Syrian brothers, who enjoy all the rights and privileges that guarantee them a decent life among their Gulf brothers. "On the political level, the GCC states have supported the efforts of the United Nations and its special envoy aimed at a political solution to the Syrian crisis, in accordance with the Geneva 1 statement and Security Council resolution No. (2254), in which the Security Council called on the former Syrian regime to exercise wisdom and work to achieve immediate reforms that meet the aspirations of the Syrian people, preserve its unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, and reject any foreign interference in its internal affairs," Albudaiwi said. In this context, he stressed that the repeated Israeli attacks on the sisterly Syrian Arab Republic, and the Israeli occupation forces' occupation of the buffer zone on the Syrian border, as well as the Israeli government's decision to expand the construction of settlements in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, are a flagrant violation of international laws and Security Council resolutions, and the disengagement agreement signed between Syria and Israel (1974). He called on the international community to play its role and responsibilities to stop these attacks on Syrian lands, and the withdrawal of Israel from all occupied Syrian territories, especially since all GCC states welcomed the contents of the statement issued by the Arab Ministerial Contact Committee on Syria, which was held on December 14, 2024, in Aqaba, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Furthermore, Albudaiwi praised the positive steps taken by the interim Syrian government in the peaceful transfer of power, ensuring the safety of civilians, and the positions it announced to preserve Syrian state institutions and resources, and achieve national reconciliation, as key pillars for maintaining security and stability, and restoring Syria's regional role and international standing. The GCC chief stressed the need for the concerted efforts of all parties and components of the Syrian people, and prioritising the supreme interest and national unity, and consecrating the language of dialogue, to achieve the aspirations of the brotherly Syrian people in consolidating security, stability, development, and prosperity. He stressed the keenness and interest of the GCC states in their brotherly and historical relations, and their strong ties with the Syrian Arab Republic and the Lebanese Republic, and making every effort to ensure their security and stability, which contributes to their prosperity and the sustainable decent living of their peoples. Liverpool powered seven points clear at the top of the Premier League as the title favourites survived a scare in their 3-1 win against Leicester, while Bruno Fernandes was sent off in Manchester United's dismal 2-0 defeat at lowly Wolves. Erling Haaland missed a penalty as crisis-torn Manchester City failed to end their dismal run with a 1-1 draw against Everton, but it was United's travails and Liverpool's remarkable run that took centre-stage on Thursday. Arne Slot's side were shocked by Jordan Ayew's early strike at Anfield, but the leaders recovered their composure to equalise just before the interval through Cody Gakpo. England midfielder Jones marked his 100th top-flight appearance with the second goal soon after half-time. Mohamed Salah's 19th goal this term wrapped up Liverpool's 11th win in their last 13 games in all competitions. "We created enough, but because we went 1-0 down it was a game," Liverpool manager Slot said. "Then you saw how good we are and Leicester didn't want to come back into the game." Liverpool's comeback lifted them well clear of second-placed Chelsea, who were defeated 2-1 by Fulham earlier in the day. United suffered a third successive loss in all competitions to leave new boss Ruben Amorim with five defeats in his first 10 games. Fernandes was dismissed two minutes into the second half at Molineux for a second bookable offence. United's 10 men cracked in the 58th minute when Matheus Cunha's corner went straight in as goalkeeper Andre Onana flapped under pressure. Hwang Hee-chan compounded Amorim's misery when he tapped in with just seconds left. Losing to fourth-bottom Wolves was another bitter blow for United, who endured a humiliating 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth at Old Trafford last weekend after losing 4-3 in the League Cup at Tottenham. With his team marooned in 14th place -- just eight points above the relegation zone -- Amorim's woes might not be over, with United facing in-form Newcastle on Monday before travelling to Liverpool in their first game of 2025. "It's so tough to win games in this league with 11 men. With 10 men, it's more difficult," Amorim said. Champions Manchester City have just one victory in their last 13 games in all competitions as their Christmas schedule started in disappointing fashion. Bernardo Silva put City in front early on before Iliman Ndiaye salvaged a point for Everton. Seven minutes into the second half, Haaland had the chance to end his longest goal drought at the Etihad but Jordan Pickford denied him. City are languishing in seventh place and sit five points adrift of the top four, with their astonishing decline showing no sign of ending. "Of course we need results and we didn't get it. The team played really good again in all departments and unfortunately could not win," said City boss Pep Guardiola. At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea were stunned by Fulham's late fightback in a dramatic west London derby. It was Chelsea's first home defeat against Fulham since 1979. Cole Palmer put Chelsea ahead after 16 minutes, the England forward drilling home from the edge of the area after weaving through the Fulham defence in dazzling style. But Fulham levelled with eight minutes left when Harry Wilson nodded in from close range. There was worse to come for the Blues when Rodrigo Muniz completed the turnaround in the 95th minute. Nottingham Forest climbed to third place after a 1-0 win against sputtering Tottenham at the City Ground. Forest's fourth successive win was sweet revenge for boss Nuno Espirito Santo, whose former club Tottenham had Djed Spence sent off in the closing moments for a second booking. Tottenham are stuck in 11th as the pressure mounts on boss Ange Postecoglou. Newcastle swatted aside 10-man Aston Villa 3-0, moving up to fifth place after winning three consecutive league games for the first time since 2023. Jarrod Bowen's 59th-minute goal gave West Ham a 1-0 win at bottom of the table Southampton after the visitors saw Guido Rodriguez's red card overturned by VAR. It was a frustrating start for new Saints boss Ivan Juric, who has replaced the sacked Russell Martin. Bournemouth and Crystal Palace shared a goalless draw at the Vitality Stadium. smg/nfRuben Amorim takes charge of Manchester United for the first time in Sunday's trip to Ipswich, while Manchester City are aiming to snap a historic losing streak for Pep Guardiola against Tottenham. With just one game left until the playoffs begin, the AFC South champions know they’ll have to get much better to be competitive in the postseason. “That’s not who we are. That’s not what we represent,” coach DeMeco Ryans said. “What we put out there on the field, that’s not Texans football. For anybody to come back and bounce back from it you’ve got to check yourself and make sure you’re playing with elite execution and elite energy.” The 29-point loss to the Ravens was Houston’s most lopsided defeat this season. The defense gave up a season-high 251 yards rushing and the offense was shut out, with the team’s only points coming on a second-quarter safety. Quarterback C.J. Stroud threw an interception and missed several throws in a performance he called “one of the worst games of my whole career.” He was asked how he and the team can move on from such a tough loss. “That’s the only thing we can do,” he said. “There is nothing in life you can go ... back and re-do, so it’s all about how you respond. You hit rock bottom; the only way is up. So, we still have a lot of hope. At the end of the day, we clinched our division. We still have an opportunity in the playoffs.” The Texans (9-7) went 0 for 2 in the red zone Wednesday to lower their red zone efficiency to 50.94% this season, which ranks 26th in the NFL. After their safety Wednesday, they had a chance to cut the lead or potentially tie the game when they had a first down at the 10-yard line. Joe Mixon ran for 7 yards on first down before the drive stalled. He was dropped for a 1-yard loss on second down before an incompletion by Stroud brought up fourth-and-4. Stroud threw a short pass to Mixon and he was stopped at the 1-yard line to give the Ravens the ball back. Lamar Jackson then led a 99-yard drive capped by a 9-yard touchdown pass to make it 17-2. What's working Not much was working in this debacle. About the only good thing that happened for the Texans on Wednesday was a 45-yard kickoff return by Dameon Pierce in the second quarter to start the drive that ended with Mixon being stopped on fourth down. The second-year player is averaging 38.1 yards per return. What needs help The Texans managed just 58 yards rushing against the Ravens with Mixon gaining 26 yards on nine carries. Houston hasn’t reached 100 yards rushing in three straight games and four of its past five. The Texans must get their running game going to take some pressure off Stroud, who is working with a thin receiving group with Tank Dell and Stefon Diggs out for the season with knee injuries. Stock up WR John Metchie led the team with five receptions for 48 yards as he took on a bigger role in the offense in the first game without Dell. It’s the second-most yards Metchie has had in a three-year career where he missed his entire rookie season undergoing cancer treatments. Stock down Wednesday was the second time in three games where Mixon was held to fewer than 30 yards rushing. He started the season strong, running for at least 100 yards in six of his first eight games. But he’s struggled since then, reaching 100 yards just once in five games.
